Introduction of Coordinate Geometry
In the previous class, students have studied that to locate the position of a point on a plane, we require a pair of coordinate axes. The distance of a point from the y-axis is called its x-coordinate, or abscissa. The distance of a point from the x-axis is called its y-coordinate, or ordinate. The coordinates of a point on the x-axis are of the form(x, 0), and of a point on the y-axis are of the form (0, y).
Objectives of Coordinate Geometry
To find the distance between two different points whose co-ordinates are given and finding the co-ordinates of a point, which divides the line segment joining two points in a given ratio internally. To find the co-ordinates of the mid-point of the join of two points to get the coordinates of the centroid of a triangle with given vertices. Important Results in Coordinate Geometry
The co-ordinates of the origin are (0, 0)
The y co-ordinate of every point on the x-axis is 0 and the x co-ordinate of every point on the y-axis is 0.
The two axes XOX’ and YOY’ divide the plane into four parts called quadrants.
The distance of the line segment joining two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) is given by:
Historical Facts of Coordinate Geometry
Rene Descartes (1596 – 1650) was a French philosopher, mathematician whose work ‘La geometrie’ includes his application of algebra to geometry from which we now have Cartesian geometry.
